Canucks Trim Roster

The team is starting to resemble what it’s going to look like on opening night.

The following players have been assigned to the Manitoba Moose:

Bouck, Tyler Right Wing Manitoba Moose AHL
Brown, Mike Right Wing Manitoba Moose AHL
Edler, Alexander Defence Manitoba Moose AHL
Goren, Lee Right Wing Manitoba Moose AHL
MacIntyre, Drew Goaltender Manitoba Moose AHL
McIver, Nathan Defence Manitoba Moose AHL
Reid, Brandon Centre Manitoba Moose AHL
Schultz, Jesse Right Wing Manitoba Moose AHL
Tremblay, Yannick Defence Manitoba Moose AHL

The following player has been assigned to his junior team:

Grabner, Michael Right Wing Spokane Chiefs WHL

A couple surprises there.  First, how is it that Patrick Coulombe is still with the team, and Yannick Tremblay gets sent down?  I always figured it would be between Tremblay & Fitzpatrick for the 7th D-man position and I guess this answers that question.  Apparently they like what this Coulombe kid is doing.  The really telling will be in the next couple games (assuming he dresses for one of them) as they play against better rosters.  I stand by my word that he is simply to small to make it in this league as a defenseman.

I never felt Bourdon would get sent to the farm.  The team is simply not deep enough at this position to be able to afford that.  And moving Tremblay pretty much guarantees him a spot opening night.

The other move that took me off guard was Tyler Bouck.  He came to camp in the best shape of all the Canuck players, yet finds himself down on the farm a week before opening night.  That’s got to be a bit of a shock for him.  After an injury plagued season last year, you know that he wanted it bad this time.  He’ll definitely be one of the first call ups this season though.

Brandon Reid.  Why didn’t he just stay in Europe so I wouldn’t have to write about him.  He’s still quick and shifty, and still can’t finish.  The biggest issue I see with Reid is that he won’t pass the puck.  And because he can’t finish, he’s useless to the team at the NHL level.  He may get a sniff later this season, but won’t stick if better options become available.

Guys still on the bubble are Hansen, Green, Santala, Rypien, Fitzpatrick, & Coulombe.  At least 2 will be cut from this list to get down to a 23 man roster.  But it’s unlikely for the Canucks to carry this many throughout the seasons so expect another cut to come shortly thereafter.
