Trading the First Round Pick

I’ve touched on this a few years ago, but I believe that NO team should ever trade away their first round draft pick.  Ever.

It’s your best chance at building your team.  A good draft for an NHL franchise is to have two players become full-time NHLer’s.  The first round gives you the best opportunity to get one of those, and one of those that can eventually play on one of the top 2 lines, a top 2 defenceman, or a future starting goaltender.

Don’t trade it Mike.  Don’t make this your first step in reshaping our team.  It simply tells me you don’t know what it takes to make a team successful in perpetuity.
